Streszczenie angielskie: Digoxinis a drug which has been known for about 200 years. At present it also playes an important role in the modern therapy of congestive heart failure with diuretics and angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors. Recent data have shown that digoxin in average recommended dose (0.25 mg per day) may have clinical value in mild or moderate heart failure caused by systolic ventricular dysfunction, independently of the heart rate (with normal sinus rhytm or with atrial fibrillation). Digoxin prevents clinical deterioration and hospitalization and improves exercise tolerance and left ventricular function, but has no effect on survival. In addition, its role in reducing sympathetic nervous system activity and its modulating effects on neurohormonal status in patients with advanced heart failure ar every important and beneficial.

Streszczenie angielskie: Incubation of rat brain synaptosomal-mitochondrial fraction with tert-butylhydroperoxide resulted in accumulation of the lipid peroxidatin product, conjugated dienes, damage of teh synaptosomal membrane as evidenced by leakage of lactate dehydrogenase, and decrease of the total content of glutathione and of teh GSH/GSSG ratio. This treatment also produced a consideraable decrease of the ouabain-sensitive ATPase activity and a much smaller diminution of the activities of glutathione reductase and glutathione transferase. Preincubation of the synaptosomal/michochondrial fraction with 0.5 or 1.0 mM L-methionine significantly protected against lipid peroxidation, membrane damage and changes in the glutatione system produced by low (1 mM) concentrations of tert-butylhydroperoxide and completely preented inactivation of uabain-sensitive ATPase, gluathione reductase and glutathione transferease by such treatment. The importance of L-methionine in antioxidant protection is discussed.
