Streszczenie angielskie: In several tumours expression of CD44 and nm23 protein has been linked to tumour progression and metastasis. The aim of this study was to determine if there is any relationship between CD44v6 and nm23 protein immunoreactivity in squamous cancer cells and prognosis in patients with laryngeal carcinoma. The samples of human larynx cancer from patients with lymph node metastases and without lymph node involvement were analysed for CD44v6 and nm23 protein expression by immunohistochemistry using monoclonal antibodies. There was no significant difference in CD44v6 immunoexpression in cancer cells in patients with and without metastases. The statistical analysis did not reveal difference in survival time between patients with high and low CD44v6 immunoreactivity. The expression of nm23 protein in laryngeal cancer in patients with lymphe node metastases was significantly decreased in comparison with patients without metastases. Analysis of survival revealed that patients with lower expression of nm23 protein in tumour tissue had significantly shorter survival than patients with higher nm23 immunoreactivity. The results suggest that nm23 protein immunoreactivity can be useful in predicting tumour behviour in laryngeal cancer patients and indicate a lack of association between CD44v6 immunoexpression and tumour progression in those patients.

Streszczenie angielskie: Immunoperoxidase staining was carried out using monoclonal antibodies against integrins ŕ1á1, ŕ2á1, ŕ3á1, ŕ4á1 and ŕ6á1 on renal biopsy specimens from patients with IgA nephropathy (IgN, n = 15) and Henoch-Schoenlein nephritis (HSN, n = 10). The basic pattern of glomerular and tubulointerstitial (ŕ1 - á6)á1 integrin distribution was similar in both studied groups, however increase in mesangial ŕ1á1 integrin immunoexpression in biopsies from HSN patients as compared to biopsies from IgAN patients was observed. There were no statistical differences in the intensity of tubulointerstitial (ŕ1 - ŕ6)á1 integrins immunolabelling in renal tissue between IgAN and HSN patients. The similar pattern of distribution of á1 integrins in renal tissue in IgAN and HSN patients may support the hypothesis of common pathogenesis of IgAN and HSN. Upregulation of ŕ1á1 integrin on mesangial regions in biopsy specimens in patients with HSN may be connected to the much more florid glomerular changes in renal tissue in this type of glomerulonephritis than in IgAN.

Streszczenie angielskie: Immunoperoxidase staining was carried out using monoclonal antibodies against CD44, ŕ-smooth muscle actin and CD68 on renal biopsy specimens from patients with IgA nephropathy (IgAN, n=16) and mesangial proliferative IgA-negative glomerulonephritis (MesProGN, n=15). As a control 10 biopsy specimens of the kidneys removed because of trauma were used. The results showed increase in glomerular CD44+ cells and CD68+ cells in IgAN biopsies as compared with controls and MesProGN. The intensity of glomerular ŕ-SMA was increased in IgAN and MesProGN as compared with controls, but no statistical differences were shown in glomerular expression of ŕ-SMA between IgAN and MesProGN. In both study groups there were significant positive correlations between glomerular CD44+ cells and CD68+ cells, as well as the intensity of ŕ-SMA immunostaining. The interstitial expression of CD44 and ŕ-SMA in IgAN patietns was significantly higher as compared with controls and MesProGN group, whereas the mean values of interstitial CD68+ cells did not differsignificantly in these glomerulopatheis. in both IgAN and MesProGN there were significant positive correlations between interstitial expression of CD44 and ŕ-SMA, between intensity of CD44 immunostaining and 68+ cells as well as interstitial volume. In conclusion, our study suggests possible role of CD44 interaction in macrophage recruitment and the development of interstitial fibrosis and glomerular sclerosis in both glomerulopathies.
