Streszczenie angielskie: The increasing number of elderly people generates a lot of economic and social problems. The majority of elderly people grow old in a pathological way, which is characteristic for present times, thus their functional age is relatively short. The treatment of polypathology, which is superimposed on physiological (desirable) ageing processes, is very expensive. Therefore we are interested in maintaning physiological ageing but one should try to deserve it throughout the whole life. Apart from genetic factors, a basic role in the ageing process is played by "life style", which is composed of physical and intellectual activities and nutritional patterns. Children, youth and adults ought to learn "Education to healthy old age" from kindergarten to retiring time. In this education the GP plays the main role but gerontologists are the teachers and supervisors for sudents and patients. Gerontologists ought to collaborate with scientists about gerontological problems in order to apply their knowledge in practice. The collaboration of gerontology, science and general medicine is necessary for the improvement of quality of treatment, care and finally - quality of life.

Streszczenie polskie: Niniejszy artykuł jest próbą podsumowania dotychczasowej wiedzy na temat choreoterapii, czyli leczenia tańcem. Informuje o możliwościach zastosowania tańca w leczeniu zaburzeń psychicznych (nerwic, psychoz, otępień) oraz chorób somatycznych (reumatoidalnego zapalenia stawów, osteoporozy, stanów terminalnych). Autorki na podstawie zgromadzonej literatury przedstawiły pozytywne rezultaty, jakie przynosi wprowadzenie choreoterapii do praktyki klinicznej.

Streszczenie angielskie: The article is an attempt of review of recent achievements in dance therapy. Streszczenie angielskie: The substantial importance of genetic factors in the etyiology of schizophrenia was demonstrated in many studies. The complex model of disease inheritance seems to be the most probable, involving epistatic interaction of many genes. Association studies are based on the analysis of the so-called candidate genes, which are coding for neurotransmitter receptors, neurotransmitter transportes and enzymes involved in their metabolism. In the present work the results of an association study of VNTR polymorphism of dopamine transporter gene (DAT) in schizophrenia are presented. This polymorphism is characterised by a different number of tandem repeats (VNTR) within the 3'-untranslated region of gene. In Caucasians the 40 base pair motif has 3 to 11 repeates, the most common (about 90 p.c.) are alleles containing 9 and 10 repeats. In the present study no association between the polymorphism studied and schizophrenia was found.

Streszczenie angielskie: Beckground and aim: We aimed to study the differences in the deprivation of needs among women and men in connection with the necessity of being hospitalised in a psychiatric ward. Material and method: The study included 53 patients hospitalised in the Neuropsychiatric Hospital in Lubliniec (29 women, 24 men). We took into account the number of psychiatric hospitalisations, lenght of the present psychiatric hospitalisation and clinical diagnosis. As a clinical tool we used a questionnaire constructed especially for the study. The questionnaire is based on Murray's needs' conception. Results: Although the average value of the deprivation of needs for both examined groups appeared to be the same, differences appeared within the hierarchy of needs. There are statistically significant differences between men and women referring to the needs of getting to know new things, of reaching one's own ambition and sexual satisfaction. Conclusion: In certain aspects men and women differ significantly in the deprivation of needs when hospitalised.
