Streszczenie angielskie: The classification criteria of hypothyroidism are discussed, its causes and symptoms, with emphasis placed on characteristic changes appearing in laboratory tests, as well as the priniciples of treatment. Hypometabolic crisis is considered separately. The author presents 3 cases of hyperthyroidism which occurred in relatives. 1. A male aged 47 who for a period of 2 years complained of muscular pains, dermal changes, arthralgia, obesity, laryngologic disorders, and finally sleepiness and bradyphrenia. After 2 years of unsuccessful treatment, hypothyroidism - hypothyreosis m. Hashimoto - was diagnosed based on laboratory tests results (very high cholesterol level) and then changes in the level of thyroid hormones. After the introduction of hormone treatment euthyroidism was obtained. Maintenance dose was applied. The patient did not mention complaints. 2. A female aged 51 - the sister of patient 1. Hypothyroidism diagnosed when visiting a coctor due to virus infection and dermal complaints (dryness, oedema, falling out of the hair). For 13 years she has been taking thyroid hormones which enable the maintenance of euthyroidism. 3. A female aged 32 - daughter of patient 2 and niece of patient 1. Hypothyroidism occurred twice after childbirth and disappeared after the application of hormone treatment. After the second pregnancy further maintenance was applied. The mother of patient 1 and 2, already deceased, had previously undergone excision of the thyroid gland due to tumour.
