    Streszczenie angielskie: Several studies revealed that postmenopausal decrease in skin thickness and elasticity, uterine prolapse as well as stress urinary incontinence are, at least in part, results of impaired collagen turnover. This study aimed at the evaluation of collagen content in the rectus sheath of premenopausal and postmenopausal women. Samples of the anterior layer of the rectus sheath were taken from 16 premenopausal and 7 postmenopausal women aged 31-51 years and 51-75 years, respectively, undergoing surgery due to benign diseases of the uterus or gall bladder. Collagen was extracted with acetic acid and subsequently with pepsin. The concentartion of collagen (all types) was measured using Sicrol Collagen Assay (Biocolor Ltd., Belfast, N. Irland). Significantly less collagen was extraced from the rectus sheath derived from postmenopausal as compared to premenopausal women (11.0 ń 5.5 (g/gram of wet tissue versus 21.5 ń 10.4 (g/gramof wet tissue; p=0.0033). Moreover, a negative correlation between collagen content and age of the subjects was observed (r = -0.47; p = 0.026). However, when the analysis was carried out separately for each group of women an association between the decrease in collagen content and aage was observed only in women after the menopause. Results of the study indicate that the content ofcollagen in the rectus sheath declines afetr the menopause. This effect seems to be dependant on hormonal changes related to menopause rather than on the process of ageing. The decrease in collagen content may cause faulty wound healing as well as predispose to abdominal hernias.

    Streszczenie polskie: Przedstawiamy przypadek urazowego pęknięcia prawej komory serca, w wyniku tępego urazu klatki piersiowej z powodzeniem leczonego operacyjnie. Brak uszkodzeń innych narządów klatki piersiowej oraz powolne narastanie tamponady osierdzia były przyczyną opóźnionej decyzji o torakotomii.
