    Streszczenie angielskie: The new Polish legislation (Atomic Law) and recent recommendations of international organizations require to pay more attention to control the risk associated with the operation of medical radiation sources. A comprehensive regulatory framework is necessary to ensure that a consistent approach is applied to all elements of the safety system. The paper shortly describes how safety assessment fits into the regulatory process and provides some information on the elements of a safety assessment. Complementary to the safety assessment, a program of quality assurance, QA, should be implemented to periodically check all aparameters which influence the patient dose and the image quality. The last part of the paper concern the implementation of diagnostic reference levels, recommended as a practical tool to mange radiation dose to patients in diagnostic radiology and nuclear medicine.
