Streszczenie angielskie: Background: The aim of the study is to present the technique of digital imaging in mammographic diagnostics. Material/Methods: Methods of obtaining a mammographic image in digital form were presented. Approachable technologies of digital mammography were characterized. Most important parameters of digital imaging were discussed. Potential advantages and existing limitations of using digital mammography were qualified. Experimental technolgies using digital mammography were also presented. Results: Digital mammography is currently not a very widespread, but quickly expanding technique, characterized by possibilities, inaccessible in conventional mammography. Digital imaging, compared to conventional one, has better contrast resolution and contrast dynamics, possibilities of digital image postprocessing, reduction of radiation dose, lack of traditional X-ray films developments system, possibility of electronic archiving and using techniques of teleradiology and computer aided diagnosis. However currently digital mammography has worse spatial resolution and is much more expensive then conventional one. Conclusions: In spite of not a wide spread of digital mammography systems, knowledge of technical principles, possibilities and limitations of this method is necessary, because in future it will progressively replace currently used systems of conventional mammography.

Streszczenie angielskie: Background: The aim of the study is to determine the usefulness of evaluation of breast microcalcifications clusters without accompanying masses in digital mammography, compared to conventional mammography. Material/Methods: Both conventional mammography with magnified views and digital mammography were performed in 109 women with 122 clusters of brease microcalcifications without accompanying masses. Number of microcalcifications in a cluster, their morphology accordig to Le Gal adn BI-RADS category ratings were determined independently on the basis of conventional and digital images. 10 clusters assessed as certainly benign (BI-RADS 2) both in conventional and digital imaging were only controlled in conventional mammography. 112 clusters of remaining categories (BI-RADS 3-5) were verified pathologically, with material obtained in most cases by stereotactic mammotome biopsy under the quidance of digital mammography. Results: In the group of all clusters an average number of microcalifications in a cluster, assessed in digital mammography, was greater then in conventional mammography. Only in a group of clusters with morphology of type 3 according to Le Gal fewer micorcalcifications were found in digital mammography ten in conventional mammography. BI-RADS classification on the basis of digital mammography better forecased the character of lesions. Sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values in detection of malignant lesions on the basis of evaluation of microcalcifications clusters in digital mammography were higher then corresponding values in conventional mammography. Conclusions: In the evaluation of breast microcalcifications clusers...

Streszczenie angielskie: Background: The aim of study is to determine the usefulness of stereotactic mammotome biopsy (SMB) under the guidance of digital mammography in the verification of clusters of breast microcalcifications BI-RADS 3-5 categories without accompanying masses. Material/Methods: Material included 97 patients with 108 clustsers of microcalcifications BI-RADS 3/5 categories without accompanying masses. In all cases verification in SMB was ordered. Procedure was performed in 98 clustsers. In 10 clustsers using of SMB was not possible and then surgical biopsy was performed. Results: In 98 from among clustsers with SMB performed, pathological examiantion proved presence of only benign lesions in 86 cases, an atypical lesion in 2 cases, malignant lesions in 10 cases (including 8 preinvasive lesions). Most (97.2 p.c.) clussters of microcalcifications, classified as BI-RADS 3 corresonded to benign lesions. In BI-RADS 4 group lesions were benign in 72.7 p.c., atypical in 4.5 p.c., malginant in 22.7 p.c. In BI-RADS 5 group most (80 p.c.) lesions were malignant. Conclusions: It was found, that SM can be used as a safe and reliable method of verification of the nature of clusters of breast microcalcifiactions witout accompanying masses in all casess of BI-RADS 4 adn 5 categories and in selected cases of BI-RADS 3 category. SMB enables avoiding surgery in a considerable number of patients with microcalcifications of BI-RADS 4 category.
