Streszczenie angielskie: The ABO blood group system was discovered one hundred years ago; the respective ABH antigens were found in the protein and lipid membrane components of various cells (most importantly, erythrocytes) and soluble blood group substances. The genetics of the ABO system was also elucidated. This old knowledge is still useful, bringing new applications. Although we do not really know the complete biological role of blood group systems, including that of the major ABO sytem, data, which is still being accumulated, ensure scientists and physicians of its importance in research and the diagnosis and therapy of diseases. For example, susceptibility to some diseases has been shown to be connected with the blood group of the patient, or the phanotype changes of the ABH determinations may indicate the presence of defined form of cancer. The data presented in this article clearly suggest the validity of the ABO blood group system in medical and biological sciences.

Streszczenie angielskie: Endoscopic inspection is widely used in contemporary medicine as a diagnostic tool. Recent developments show also the capabilities of this technology for some highly specialized therapeutic procedures. Although endoscopy is known as an imaging device for intractivity inspection, it doesn't exceed its role as only two dimensional display. This paper explains how to overcome this limitation be exploting for optical techniques as holography or moire projection, what can result not only in three dimensional imaging but in measurements, as well. The potential role of new technique called virtually endoscopy is discussed, as well.

Streszczenie angielskie: The advantages of sol-gel biomaterials as host matrices for various dopants are pointed out. The role of optode as a transducer of external signal to the detecting units is discussed in this light, explaining the term of an integrated sensing system. Various sensors with bulk or film sol-gel optodes are presented with a special emphasis on oxygen and urea sensors. The advantages of sol-gel microsensors are discussed, as well.
