    Streszczenie angielskie: Cytokines are low molecular weight proteins secreted by different cells in response to different stimuli. Among many other there is a group of so called "pro-inflammatory cytokines". This term was introduced due to their primary established function as mediators of inflammaotry response of the immunological system. There are many other effects of cytokines that have been recognized so far, particularly their role int the pathogenesis of cardiovascular diseases e.g. atherosclerosis, acute coronary syndromes and especially heart failure (CHF). The role of several pro-inflammatory cytokines (tumor necrosis factor alpha, interleukin 1 and interlukin 6) in the pathogenesis of CHF and therapeutic attempts to attenuate their influence on the course and prognosis of CHF is highlighted in this paper.

    Streszczenie angielskie: Congestive heart failure is a challenge for cardiologists all over the world. Its prevalence is continuously growing up. Despite the great progress in the treatment of congestive heart failure achieved lately, the prognosis still remains unfavourable. new methods of therapy are under investigation. We discussed the role of calcium channel antagonists in the treatment of congestive heart failure. unfortunately, it was showed that, except for amlodipine, any other drug from this group did not have a positive effect in the therapy of the systolic heart failure. The small number of randomised controlled trials does not allow to give any recomendations for the use of calcium channel antagonists in the diastolic heart failure.
