Streszczenie angielskie: Background: Long-term safety and efficacy of Exelon (rivastigmine) was evaluated in a multi-center open label study of 62 patients with probable mild to moderated Alzheimer's disease living in community setting. Material/Methods: The patients started treatment with 1.5 mg bid (3 mg/day) Exelon and were scheduled to receive doses of 1.5 mg bid Exelon escalating on a biweekly basis. The patients were maintained on the highest tolerated dose within the assigned dose range 1.5 - 60.0 mg bid (3 - 12 mg/day) for the rest of the study. Evaluations were scheduled at biweekly intervals for the first 8 weeks and subsequently at study weeks 12, 18 and 26. Effects of Exelon on cognition were evaluated using the mini-mental state examination (MMSE) and selected items of Alzhemier's disease assessment scale (ADAS-cog) and the staging ot the disease was measured using the global deterioration scale (GDS). Safety was monitored by physical examinations, vital signs, laboratory tests, ECG recording and by the assessment of adverse events. Resutls: 55 patients completed the study (89 p.c.). Patients treated for 26 weeks showed the mean MMSE, ADAS-cog and GDS scores close to baseline values (p = NS) with no improvement and no deterioration. Exelon was generally well tolerated with 11 p.c. of patients withdrawing due to adverse events. The most frequently reported adverse events related to the gastrointestinal tract. Conclusions: In conclusion, the study data indicate that treatment with Exelon is safe, generally well tolerated and inhibits the progression of cognitive decline in patients wtih mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease over 26 weeks of treatment.

Streszczenie angielskie: A study of the knowledge about AIDS was conducted in soldiers in obligatory military service, basing on the assumption that AIDS ifnection risk is related to the level of knowledge about the disease. The study was conducted twice within 5 years (in 1993 and 1998) in the same soldiers. Group I, examined in 1993, consisted of 758 soldiers, while Group II, investigated in 1998 - 510. The level of knowledge of HIV/AIDS was varied: 10 respondents from Group II showed very poor knowledge - 10 soldiers had less than 20 points on a 46-point scale; in Group I, there was no such results. At the same time, 57 soldiers (11 p.c.) from Group I achieved the maximum result, i.e. 46 points (there were 17 such soldiers in Group I - 2.2 p.c.). Men who are better educated, living in privince capitals, in a worse material condition, more exposed to mass media, irreligious, and personally knowing an infected person, know more about AIDS. The scope of knowledge concerning the most popular, and at the same time, the simplest methods of protection against HIV (also against other sexually transmitted diseases) seems to be sufficient. Most respondents declare that they use condoms and have sex with one partner. The study shows that in soldiers, the knowledge about AIDS is poor and chaotic. A slightly better knowledge was observed in Group II, and it was probably and effect of school education supplemented with elements of sexual eduaction. The hypothesis that in soldiers after one year of service, the knowledge would be greater than that in new recruits, was not confirmed.
