Streszczenie angielskie: The year of 1986 has changed the face of health promotion. At an international conference in Canada "The Ottawa Charter" proclaimed the constitution of health promotion. In accordance with its guidelines, the health promotion is an interdisciplinary venture, demanding knowledge not only in medicine, but also in psychology, sociology, social politics, economy, law, and many others. However, the representatives of primary health care - both general practitioners and community pharmacists - hold particular moral responsibility for health promotion. Among medical professions, pharmacists are especially accessible (without making an appointment) to the public for more or less eight hours per day. They encounter a vide variety of patients, who have a choice of remaining anonymous during their conversations. Moreover, a pharmacist is often the first person learning about a patient's health problems.

Streszczenie angielskie: Is never to late to quit smoking. The destructive influence of smoking habit and smoking related diseases exerted on human health state deeply justifies participation of healthcare personnel in smoking cessation proces, or even make it indispensable. Community pharmacists should play a dominant role in the proces due to their accessibility and ability to maintain permanent relation with various groups of patients. Therefore, besides the proper selection of pharmacotherapy it is becoming increasingly important to support and motivate patients by experts.
