Streszczenie angielskie: A turbulent flow can be a source of sounds called "murmur" or "souffle", and can be a result of pathology in the blood vascular system. A model of acoustical effects, related to stenosis of the aorta, was created. Numerical calculations of pressure fluctuations in the environment of a simulated turbulent region were performed.

Streszczenie angielskie: One of the recognized side effects of gentamicin is ototoxicity. The mechanism underlying the organ specificity of this side effect of gentamicin has not been fully established. In view of the fact that a number of pharmacologic agents are known to from complexes with melanin and melanin is an abundant constituent of the inner ear tissues, we determined whether gentamicin interacts with melanin and how this process affects the biosynthesis of collagen in cultured human skin fibroblasts. Our results indicate that gentamicin forms comples with melanin. The amount of gentamicin bound to melanin increases with increasing of initial drug concentration. The Scatchard plot analysis of drug binding to melanin showed that at least two classes of independent binding sites are implicated in gentamicin-melanin complex formation: one class with an association constant K1 ~ 4 x 10**3 M**-1, and the second class with an association constant K2 ~ 3 x 10**2 M**-1. The number of total binding sites (n1 + n2) was calculated as about 1.36 ćmol gentamicin per 1 mg melanin. We have suggested that prolidase, an enzyme involved in collagen metabolism, may be one of the targets for gentamicin-induced inhibition of collagen biosynthesis. We found that gentamycin-induced inhibition of prolidase activity (IC50 ~ 100 ćM) and collagen biosynthesis (IC50 ~ 100 ćM). At this concentration of gentamicin, DNA biosynthesis in human skin fibroblasts was inhibited only by about 30 p.c. Melanin at 100 ćg/ml produced about 25 p.c. inhibition of DNA synthesis and about 30 p.c. inhibition of prolidase activity, ...

Streszczenie angielskie: Estimating the flow curve in coronary arteries is of great importance both from point of view of diagnosis, modeling and simulation. The aim of this work is to create a model of the coronary artery tree, simulate the stenosis areas in a particular coronary vessel and study the influence of different stenosis levels and coronary by-pass connections on the flow pattern. The model of the left coronary artery was created, based on an arteriogram developed by Sapoznikow [3] and Wang [4], where the vessel was divided into 14 segments described by geometrical and mechanical parameters. Each unit in the model is represented by an electrical analogue circuit, with R, L, C values obtained from coronary artery parameters based on the relationships resulting from Newtonian and continuity equations. The model-network of adequately connected blocks of transfer functions - corresponding to each left coronary artery segment was implemented in the Matlab-Simulink environment. A local stenosis was simulated by the change in geometrical and mechanical features of a particular segment causing a change in its transfer function. As a result of computer simulations performed on the model, the flow and pressure signals in a chosen aortic segment can be computed.

Streszczenie polskie: Porównywano stabilność biochemiczną tkanek osierdzia świni: natywnej i modyfikowanych za pomocą aldehydu glutarowego (GA) lub mrówkowego (FA). Analizowano profile elektroforetyczne białek uwalnianych z badanych tkanek, zarówno trawionych i nie poddawanych działaniu pankreatyny. Tkanki modyfikowane były bardziej odporne na trawienie enzymatyczne, niż tkanka natywna. Mała liczba prążków reprezentujących białka niskocząsteczkowe w ekstraktach uzyskanych z tkanek modyfikowanych świadczy o większej stabilności tych tkanek spowodowanej ich silniejszym usieciowaniem. Wydłużenie czasu modyfikacji powodowało zwiększenie efektu stabilizacji tkanek.

Streszczenie angielskie: Biochemical stability of pericardial tissues native and modified using glutaraldehyde (GA) and formalaldehyde (FA) have been compared. The electrophoretic profiles of the proteins released from investigated tissues, both digested and untreated with pancreatin, have been studied. The modified tissues were more resistant to enzymatic digestion as compared with native one. A small number of lines representing low-molecular proteins in extracts obtained from the modified tissues point to these tissues higher stability due to their stronger crosslinking. Prolongation of modification time caused increase in the tissues stabilization effect.
