    Streszczenie angielskie: Health is a dynamic state related to (sub)cultural factors and to good coping behaviour when dealing with day-to-day problems of life, including any symptoms. The doctor's perspective relates to a more or less objective diagnosis, the disease. The patient's perspective relates to feelings, meanings of perceived symptoms, and the illness. Feeling well doesn't mean that a person has no symptoms. On the contrary, having one or more symptoms is normal: about ninety per cent of people experience at least one symptom during any two-week period. However, only about ten per cent of such symptoms are presented to a professional. Even family doctors see only a selected part of the total morbidity spectrum in a population. The main part of total perceived symptoms is bidden, like the submerged portion of an iceberg. It is a mistake to think that this bidden morbidity consists just of minor symptoms. Even very serious symptoms are sometimes not presented to a doctor. We tend to underestimate the importance of self-limiting diseases and self-care. Studies show that there are also a lot of hidden pathogenic microbial agents which are a threat for certain risk groups. There is also a submerged iceberg of chronic diseases. People's views of their symptoms differ from the medical view. The first question in a consultation should not be "What is the diagnosis?", but "Why is this patient asking me for help today?"
