    Streszczenie polskie: Przedstawiono uproszczoną i skróconą do 3-4 dni procedurę izolowania pałeczek Corynebacterium diphtheriae z materiału pochodzącego od osób podejrzanych o błonicę oraz modyfikację testu Eleka do oznaczania toksynotwórczości wyhodowanego szczepu.

    Streszczenie angielskie: Selected elements of simplified, bacteriological diagnosis of diphtheria were presented. The procedure of Corynebacterium strains isolation from diphtheria suspected persons and performing of toxin testing of potentially toxigenic isolates: Corynebacterium diphtheriae, C. ulcerans and C. pseudotuberculosis were shortened. The role of selective tellurite media was underlined but Loeffler medium was rejected. Columbia blood agar plate was utilized for preliminary culture. Biochemical tests and toxin testing were performed from this medium. Presented diphtheria diagnosis scheme may have practical application for the laboratory work in Poland.

    Streszczenie angielskie: L. monocytogenes is a bacterium widespread in natural environmental and can be found in water, soil, decaying vegetation and animal feces. Many food products are contaminated with L. monocytogenes; it has been recovered from raw vegetables, milk, fish, poultry and meat. Investigation of several epidemics of listeriosis confirmed that transmission of L. monocytogenes in food causes human disease, L. monocytogenes is a facultative intracellular bacterium which can invade eucariotic cells including fibroblasts, macrophages, epithelial cells. This pathogen has capacity to enter cells, escape from a phagosome, grow in a cytoplasm, exploit a host system of actin-based motility and spread from cell to cell. Listeriolysin O, protein ActA, phospholipases C, internalins and protein p60 are the main virulence factors which take part in an intracellular life cycle of L. monocytogenes. Invasive infection due to L. monocytogenes the most frequently presents as a bacteremia, meningoencephalitis and perinatal listeriosis. Pregnant woman, neonates, older persons and immunocompromised patients belong to group at increase risk of listeriosis. Immunity to L. monocytogenes is predominantly cell mediated. Combination of ampicillin with gentamicin is regarded as the treatment of choice for listerial infection. Co-trimoxazole appears to be an alternative agent. Many countries have enforced regulations prohibiting the sale of food products contaminated with L. monocytogenes and dietary recommendations for persons at increased risk of listeriosis.
