Streszczenie angielskie: Oxidative stress, that is impairment in homeostasis leading to an increase in stationary level of reactive oxygen species, may have serious consequences for the organism Last years' research was focused on answering the question whether oxidative stress might be a cause of infertility This subject concerns mainly women with so-called idiopathic infertility. The aim of this study was to assess the activity of glutathione peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, total antioxidant potential and lipid peroxides in peritoneal fluid from fertile and infertile women. The material was divided into three groups: patients with idiopathic infertility, infertile patients diagnosed with PCO and control - fertile patients, without any pathology within the pelvis. In a group of patients with idiopathic infertility we noted the highest activity of antioxidant enzymes which was accompanied by a rise in total antioxidant status. The results of our research did not confirm the role of antioxidant stress in the pathogenesis of infertility in women with an unexplained cause of infertility. Women with idiopathic infertility are probably too heterogeneous. At this moment the cause of infertility in this group of women cannot be explained by inappropriate antioxidant defense or by lowered activity of enzymes of the antioxidant system.
