    Streszczenie angielskie: Backgroung. Long term alcohol intake in an amount exceeding 60 g/day increases mortality due to stroke, cardiac arrythmias or thrombo-embolic complications. The excesss in mortality occurs particularly after sudden cessation of drinking. The mechanisms of this phenomenon have not yet been elucidated. Aim. To assess blood platelet function in alcoholics during withdrawal and the usefulness of laboratory tests estimating platelet function in the prediction of thrombo-embolic complications. Methods. The study group consisted of 18 male alcoholics (mean age 35.8 ń 6.2 years) who were admitted to hospital due to non-psychotic abstinence syndrome. The mean duration of alcohol dependency ws 12 ń 6 years and the mean duration of the last alcohol intake session was 10.5 hours. The control group consisted of 18 males. (mean age 39.7 ń 6.3 years) who drank alcohol only occasionally. Blood platelet function was assessed using platelet count, platelet aggregation in response to ADP, AA and PAF, and platelet activation markers - á-TG and PF4. Results and conclusions. In alcoholics during alcohol withdraw a marked impairment of platelet function is observed, particularly in PAF-stimulated aggregation and release reaction. These changes may promote the development of thrombo-embolic complications after cessation of drinking. Monitoring of the haemostatic platelet function, in particular á-TG and PF4 serum concentrations, may be helpful in the prediction and diagnosis of thrombo-embolic complications in this group of patients.
