Streszczenie angielskie: Background: Iron-deficiency anemia (IDA) is a public health problem in the developing and even industrialized countries. Pregnant women and children under 5 years of age are among the high-risk population. Our main objectives in this study were to obtain the prevalence of IDA in pregnant women by routine methods and by serum ferritin. Material/Methods: We analysed the blood of 270 healthy pregnant mothers, 16 weeks of gestational age. A series of determinations were conducted to determine haemoglobin concentration (Hb); red blood cells count (RBC); serum ferritina and other indexes. Then a questionnaire for epidemiolgoical data, type of diet, level of education, laboratory data, etc. was filled. Results: The mean values (SD) of haematological indexes were as follows: Hb 12.07 ń 1.5 g/dl; serum ferritin 24.87 ń 19.32 ng/ml; mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration (MCHC) 31.9 ń 1.4 g/dl; mean corpuscular volume (MCV) 82.2 ń 9 fl and mean corpuscular haemoglobin (MCH) 26.4 ń 3.2 pg. 28.5 p.c. of the subjects were anaemic at the time of the study according to serum ferritin (SF 12 ng/ml) and 16.7 p.c. fo the mothers had low serum Haemoglobin (Hb 11 g/dl) (P - 0.005). There was a positive correlation (r = 0.76; P = 0.01) between Hb concentration and serum ferritin levels. Conclusion: The prevalence of IDA was 28.5 p.c., which is the same as teh prevalence found in other developing coutnries (25-35 p.c.). This shows that in southern Iran we are still far behind the health status in the industrialized countries (5-8 p.c.).

Streszczenie angielskie: Background: To study the epidemiological pattern of Hodgkin's disease (HD) in children of Southern Iran, a total of 120 cases of biopsy-proven Hodgkin's disease, less than 18 years old, submitted for histological diagnosis during 1987 - 1997 were classified, using the Rye's Classification. Material/Methods: Data on age, sex, number in households, socio-economic status, clinical presentation, signs and symptoms, para-clinical data at the time of diagnosis, treatment plan, recurrence and the presence of metastases were derived from the patients' history, and analyzed. Results: The largest subgroups were those of Mixed celularity (66.7 p.c.), followed by Nodular sclerosis (23.3 p.c.), Lypmpocytic predominance (8.3 p.c.) and Lymphocytic depletion (1.7 p.c.). The male-to-remale ratio was 2.87. Patients with Nodular sclerosis were generally older than those in other groups. The mean age in all histopathological classes was higher in females. Conclusion: The epidemiological pattern of the HD in southern Iran is similar to that of other developing countries and the northern part of Iran, in which mixed callularity is the most common subtype. However, this pattern differs from the pattern seen in the United State and Europe, since Nodular sclerosis is the most common subtype in these regions.

Streszczenie angielskie: Background: Acute Lymphobastic Leukemia (ALL) is the most common malignancy in childhood. With newer drug protocols the five-year survival rate is now close to 80 p.c. Various factors have been reported to be important for prognosis and should be considered when planning treatment. Material/Methods: In a cross-sectional study, prognostic variables and the five-year survival rate were analyzed. Data regarding demographic characteristics, family and personal history, manifestations at the time of presentation, therapeutic regimens and outcome were collected from the records of 76 ALL patients in the treatment five years prior to the study. Two pathologists performed the staging using the morphology method (L1, L2 and L3). Results: Fifty-five subjects (72.5 p.c.) survived until the end of the study. One subject succumbed to the rapid fatal course of the disease and 20 others passed away due to relapses or infection during follow-up. Conclusion: Among all variables a worse prognosis was associated (p 0.05) wiht WBC counts greater than 50.000/ml at presentation, relapse in the CNS, and relapse in the bone marrow. When Anthracycyline was included in the therapeutic regimen, the effect of chemotherapy was more favorable compared to regimens without Anthracycline (p 0.05). Other variables previously reported to have prognostic value, especially age and sex, were not significantly in our study (p 0.05). Other factors which might account for a poorer included the preponderance of L2 morphology, difficult assess to medical care, decreased compliance of families due...
