Streszczenie angielskie:
Background: D-Dimer measurement has been used as a simple, non-invasive test to rule out thromboembolic phenomena in patients at risk for deep venous thrombosis (DVT) and/or pulmonary embolism (PE). Elevated D-Dimer level caused by tissue injury is believed to show a trend for gradual decrease to normal within the first three days after trauma. Material/methods: To study the effect of tissue injury on D-Dimer levels, we conducted a prospective measurement of D-Dimer levels in severely traumatized, high-risk patients for DVT or PE, starting within 24 hours after admission until disposition of the patient or to a total of 14 days of hospitalization. Patients were observed clinically for development of thromboembolic phenomena, and were subjected to weekly surveillance using duplex scan of teh lower exatremities. Additional testing was done if requested by the attending trauma surgeon. Results: A total of 21 patients wer enrolled in the study. There were 17 males, and 4 females. Patients had a mean age of (42) with a range of (17 - 79), and a mean ISS score of (20) with a range of (4 - 50). Seven patients completed 3 - 9 days of testing. Fourteen patients had more than 10 days of testing. Nine patients completed 14 days of testing. In all patients, tissue injury resulted in increased levels of D-Dimer above a threshold (500 ng/ml), below which DVT or PE can be ruled out. The increased levels failed to normalize even when testing was continued for 14 days. Conclusions: In our study, the increased D-Dimer levels induced by tissue injury failed to show a trend of gradual return to normal within...

Streszczenie polskie:
W artykule opisano trzy przypadki stwardnienia rozsianego z współistniejącymi zaburzeniami psychicznymi o różnej symptomatologii - zespołem paranoidalnym, jadłowstrętem psychicznym i zespołem depresyjnym.

Exposure to multiple physical and chemical agents is common in occupational environments but workplace hazards and occupational safety critieria for combined exposures are lacking. NoiseCHem is an European Commision research project examining the effects of exposure to noise and chemicals on hearing and balance. Partners in Sweden, Finland, France, Denmark, UK and Poland with expert guidance from partners in the USA will examine workrers and study the mechanisms of action in animals to determine the levels of risk associated with joint exposure to noise and solvents. This paper biriefly outlines the project details.

Streszczenie angielskie:
Background: The Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain, 22574d, lacks gamma amino butyric acid (GABA) transport activity and cannot grow on this amino acid as sole nitrogen source. Both transport of and growth on this amino acid are restored when the yeast is transformed iwht a form of mouse gamma actin containing an extended C-terminal sequence (mç-A). The nature of the mutation in the transporter as well as the complementation mode are addressed. Materia/Methods: The cDNA sequence of the mutated transporter was achieved using reverse transcription, 3'- Race and cloning. For detection, Northern blotting and labeling with 32-P were used. THe putative ability of the transporter to interact with gamma actin in vivo was examined by following the interaction in vitro of synthetic peptides corresponding to the C-termini of the gamma actin and the transporter. Resutls: Up to codon 394 the mutated an native transporters are identical. At the 3' end, the mutant is by extended by 32 codons from the delta region of a Tyl transposon, giving an open reading frame of 426 codons, and a predicted structure of 9 of the 11 transmembrane domains. Peptides correspoding to the carboxy terminal regions of the truncated transporter and the elongated species of gamma actin show the potential to interact in vitro. Conclusion: The mutated GABA transporter mRNA contains an insert from the delta region of a Tyl transposon. This insertion allows expression of a transporter capable of itneracting with elongated gamma actin to rehabilitate the transporter.
