    Streszczenie angielskie: Herbal remedies have been used for ages. Among these drugs one of the most popular are essential oils, especially their alcoholic solutions such as Amol, Melisana Klosterfrau, Bittner's Pervivo and Alpa. This latterproduct is a mixture of essential oils: clove oil, eucalyptus oil, anise oil, thyme oil, lavender oil, rosemary oil, dwarf mountain pine oil, cinnamon oil, cubeb iol, as well as individual constituents, such as menthol, isoborneol acetate, linalol, nerol and terpineol acetate. Alpa is used in the treatment of muscle pains, headaches, respiratory tract infections, and also to regulate digestion.

    Streszczenie angielskie: Betulin is a pentacyclic triterpenoid that is widespread in nature, especially in the outer bark of white birches. The compound and its derivatives show several biological activities. The most promising are: highly selective cytotoxity against melanoma, glioma and neuroblastoma cell lines, antiviral (tested on HIV), antiinflammatory and antiallergic properties. The review of the current literature on the subject is presented with the respect of the syntheses os some important betulin derivatives that are known for a time.

    Streszczenie polskie: Autorka, na podstawie piśmiennictwa, omawia autoimmunologiczną cukrzycę u dorosłych, która klinicznie ujawnia się jako cukrzyca typu 2, ale w odróżnieniu od tej ostatniej szybciej wymaga stosowania insuliny. Ta postać cukrzycy została nazwana utajoną lub wolno-przebiegająca autoimmunologiczną cukrzycą dorosłych (slowly progression autoimmune type 1 diabetes, or autoimmune diabetes not requiring insulin at diagnosis - Latent Autoimmune diabetes of the Adult - LADA. W nowej klasyfikacji (ADA, 1997, WHO 1998) nie została uwzględniona, jako odrębna postać cukrzycy. Rozpoznanie cukrzycy typu LADA może nastręczać trudności, chociaż chorzy z cukrzycą typu 1. Niskie stężenie insuliny endogennej powoduje, że w krótkim czasie leczenie lekami doustnymi musi być zastąpione insuliną.

    Streszczenie angielskie: Author described autoimmune diabetes in adults, that presents clinically as type 2 diabetes and the prediction of future insulin dependency. It is designed as latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA). In the new classification LADA falls within type 1 autoimmune diabetes but in a slowly progressive form. The diagnosis of LADA becomes even more of challenge given than the age of onset of type 2 diabetes appears to have moved several decades to younger age groups and is not uncommon in the 25 to 35 year age group, particularly in high prevalence population. Such patients probably have the same disease process as patients with type 1 diabetes in that they have similar HLA genetic susceptibility as well as autoantibodies to iselt antigens, low insulin secretion and a higher rate of progression to insulin dependency. Special attention should be paid to diagnose such patients because therapy may influence the speed of progression toward insulin dependency.

    Streszczenie angielskie: Reactive oxygen species and free radicals are involved in many pathological mechanisms. In physiological conditions does exist balance between generation of free radicals and antioxidant defenses of the human body. Disturbances of prooxidant - antioxidant balance results in oxidative destabilization of cell and tissue components, leading to oxidative stress. Oxidative stress plays a role in the pathology of cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, chronic inflammations, e.g. rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes mellitus, atherosclerosis and heart damage, especially after reperfusion, following revascularisation of infarcted area. The aim of this study was to investigate total antioxidant properties of 17 herbal preparations available at Polish dispensing chemist's. Drugs were produced by local pharmacy companies. Total antioxidant properties of selected drugs were expressed as Ferric Reducing Ability of Plasma (FRAP). Studied drugs spaned from preparations of high antioxidant ability (Succus betulae, Intractum Hyperici, Azulan and Intractum Hippocastani) to those of low antioxidant characteristic (Succus Urticae, Succus Plantaginis). Comparison between Tinctura Hyperici and Intractum Hyperici indicated that Intractum Hyperici, produced by Phytopharm, had higher antioxidant properties than Tinctura Hyperici, made by Herbapol. Available at the Polish pharmaceutical market herbal drugs could be of a value as supplements in therapies, were antioxidant properties of drugs are essential. They could be helpful in the treatment and prevention of wide range of diseases characterized by oxidant / antioxidant imbalance.
