Streszczenie angielskie: The aim of the study was to determine the effect of inhalatory administration of budesonide on two pulmonary function measurements (PFM): inspiratory volume (TVinsp) and expiratory volume (TVexp) of mechanical and spontaneous breaths in newborns treated with mechanical ventilation. The subjects were 10 newborns of the mean birth weight of 950 g (ranging from 750 to 1460 g) and mean maturity of 26.6 weeks (ranging from 25 to 28 weeks). Pulmonary function measurements (PFM) were performed by using a respiratory mechanics monitoring system VenTrak**R, before and 5 minutes after administration of inhaled budesonide. The results proved a significant increase in the inspiratory volume in mechanical breaths and in expiratory volume for mechanical and spontaneous breaths. The improvement of these parameters testifies to a beneficial short-term effect of the inhaled steroid. An increase in the inspiratory volume of spontaneous breath was also observed but the difference was not statistically significant, so it cannot be concluded that this parameter has changed as a result of budesonide administration.
