Streszczenie angielskie:
The cognition-enhancing drug, nefiracetam, is in Phase III clinical trials to treate memory impairment in Alzheimer's disease (AD). Nefiracetam ameliorates acquisition of delay eyeblink classical conditioning in older rabbits, a form of associative learning with striking behavioral and neurobiological similarities in rabbits and humans. In both species, delay eyeblink conditioning engages the septo-hippocampal cholinergic system and is disrupted when the cholinergic system is antagonized. Delay eyeblink classical conditioning is impaired in normal aging and severely disrupted in AD. To test further the efficacy of nefiracetam in an animal model that mimics some of the neurobiological and behavioral effects present in AD, we tested 56 older rabbits assigned to 7 treatment groups in the 750 ms delay eyeblink conditioning procedure. Older rabbits were injected with 1.5 mg/kg scopolamine to simulate disrutpion of the cholinergic system in AD. Three doses of nefiracetam (5, 10, or 15 mg/kg) were also injected in older rabbits receiving 1.5 mg/kg scopolamine. Control groups were treated with 1.5 mg/kg scopolamine + vehicle, wehicle alone, or explicitly unpaired presentations of conditioning stimuli and vehicle or 1.5 mg/kg scopolamine + 15 mg/kg nefiracetam. Rabbits injected with 1.5 mg/kg scopolamine alone were impaired, but a dose of 15 mg/kg nefiracetam reversed significantly the behavioral impairment. Nefiracetam had ameliorating effects on a task impaired in AD in an animal model of AD: older rabbits with cholinergic system antagonism.

Streszczenie angielskie:
The paper concerns a new measure of coping: the Proactive Coping Inventory (PCI). In the first polish version of the PCI used in the study of Canadian-Polish sample was rather an experimental one. It was necessary to work out a new translation of the inventory. the team of researchers created a collective version based on these two translations. The new adaptation was proof on a Polish sample of 220 students; 193 females and 27 males; age ranged from 19 to 50, mean age was 25.19. Besides the PCI, Beck Depression Inventory and the Health Profile Scale were included in the set of measures. The results shows the mean result of the subscales of PCI, and of the items too. The intercorrelations of the scale were presented. The psychometric properties of the new Polish version of the Proactive Coping Inventory obtained in the present study are comparable to the results obtained from the original Canadian sample. It means that despite the cross-cultural differences, the inventory follows a similar course. The results also indicate that the Polish adaptation is a good equivalent of the original measure. This measure can be used in development of the theory of proactive coping with life stress.

Streszczenie angielskie:
Background: The objective of the present study is to compare the frequency and nature of expected 'whiplash' symptoms in Lithuania (a country where the late whiplash syndrome is rare or unknown) with that in Canada. Material/Methods: A symptom checklist was administered to 2 subject groups selected from local companies in Kaunas, Lithuania, and Edmonton, Canada, respectively. Subjects were asked to imagine having suffered a neck sprain (whiplash injry) with no loss of consciousness in a motor vehicle accident, and to check which, of a variety of symptoms, they would expect might arise from the injury. For symptoms they anticipated, they were asked to select the period of time they expected those symptoms to persist. Results: In both the Lithuanian and Edmontonian groups, the pattern of symptoms anticipated closely resembled the acute symptoms commonly reported by accident victims with acute neck sprain, but while up to 50 p.c. of Edmontonians also anticipated symptoms to last months or years, very fe Lithuanian subjects selected any symptoms as likely to persist. Conclusions: In Lithuania, despite the documented occurrence of neck sprain symptoms in some 50 p.c. of individuals following motor vehicle accidents, there is a very low rate of expectation of any sequelae from this injury. What current or previous aspects of society that underlie this remain uncertain. This lack of expectation of chronicity in Lithuania may, in part, determine the low prevalence of the late whiplash syndrome there. Further sutdies of symptom expectation as an etiologic factor in the late whiplash syndrome are needed.
