Streszczenie angielskie: We have demonstrated for the first time that the steroid metabolite, 2-methoxyestradiol (2-ME) is a powerful growth inhibitor of human osteosarcoma 143 B cell line by pleiotropic mechanisms involving cell cycle arrest at two different points and apoptosis. The ability of 2-ME to inhibit cell cycle at the respective points has been found concentration dependent. 1 ćM 2-ME inhibited cell cycle at G1 phase while 10 ćM 2-ME caused G2/M cell cycle arrest. As a natural estrogen metabolite 2-ME is expected to perturb the stability of microtubules (MT) in vivo analogously to Taxol - the MT binding anticancer agent. Contrary to 2-ME, Taxol induced accumulation of osteosarcoma cells in G2/M phase of cell cycle only. The presented data strongly suggest two different mechanisms of cytotoxic action of 2-ME at the level of a single cell.

Streszczenie polskie: Badania przeprowadzono w grupie 60 pacjentów ze źle wyrównaną cukrzycą (grupa badana, HbA1C 8 proc.) oraz wśród 60 osób ogólnie zdrowych (grupa porównawcza). Oceniono poszczególne składowe układu stomatognatycznego. Główne znaczenie miały wyniki badań stanu uzębienia i przyzębia. Zwrócono także uwagę na higienę jamy ustnej. W grupie badanej stwierdzono większy odsetek zaawansowanych chorób przyzębia, braków w uzębieniu oraz bardzo złą higienę.

Streszczenie angielskie: The study was carried out in a group of 60 patients with non-controlled diabetes (test group HbA1 8 p.c.) as compared to a group of 60 healthy people (control group). The elements of the stomatognatic system were assessed in all the patients. The most important were the results of the examination of the teeth, of the periodontium and the evaluation of the oral hygene status. The percentage of patients with the advanced periodontal disease, significant tooth loss and bad oral hygene was bigger in the test group.

Streszczenie angielskie: Systemic loss of bone density leading to osteoporosis has been suspected as a systemic risk factor for loss of oral bone. In edentulous patients reduction of the residual ridge is one of the most important factors affecting denture support, retention, stability, masticatory function and prosthetic treatment. The relationship between mandibular bone resorption and the severity of osteoporosis in 52 postmenopausal edentulous women aged 50-88 years was investigated. Mandibular bone structure and morphology was assessed on the pantomograms by the methods: IM, PMI and MIC. BMD L2-L4, F and the mandible was examined by DEXA. Serum Ca, P, ALP, BGP, PICP, ICTP, PTH, 25OHD, 1,25(OH)2D3 were measured. The osteoporotic women has a significantly lower lean PMI than nonosteoporotic and osteopenic subjects. The osteopenic women had the lowest IM in comparison with the osteoporotic and non-osteoporotic females. The most severe cortex porosity was in the osteoporotic group as compared to the healthy and osteopenic group. PMI was correlated with BMDF; MIC had significant correlations with BMDF, BMD L2-L4 and BMD of the body of mandible. There were no correlations between PICP, ICTP, Ca, P levels and PMI, MIC and IM. ALP level was correlated with PMI. PTH and 25OHD levels had correlations with IM. BGP level was correlated with MIC. 1,25(OH)2D3 level had significant correlation with MIC. Age and the occurrence of menopause had no influence on the mandibular bone loss. The time of the edentulousness has significant correlation with the residual ridge height. It is suggested that there is a relationship between osteoporosis and mandibular bone loss.
