    Streszczenie angielskie: In the nineteen fifties and sixties, before Schuster introduced his method of treating giant omphaloceles, the idea of a conservative approach to this condition was justified. Two options were discussed: surgical treatment with risk of subsequent respiratory-circulatory complications following reduction of the omphalocele contents into the peritoneal cavity (without support of modeern neonatal ventilators and neonatal intensive care facilities), versus conservative treatment. The latter approach did not carry the risk of the above-mentioned sequelae; however, such complications like infection, obstruction or intoxication caused by disinfectant applied to the surface of the omphalocele could occur. Edward Drescher, the Head of the Department of Pediatric Surgery, Pomeranian Academy of Medicine (1974-1977) was a supported of the conservative approach in treatment of giant omphaloceles.
