Streszczenie angielskie:
The effects of zinc on the lipid components of carp erythrocytes (Cyprinus carpio L.) were studied on red blood cells exposed to ZnSO4 (0.01 - 1 mM) for 20 h. The temperatures of the incubation medium were 5 and 20řC for carp collected in winter and summer, respectively. It was observed that increase in the concentration of metal ions in the medium led to significant changes in the content of the main phospholipid classes. Zinc induced the reduction of phosphatidylcholine as well as the increase in the content of phosphatidylserine and phosphatidylinositol. A marked increase in the levels of malondialdehyde and conjugated dienes was also found both in the cells and the incubation medium. Moreover, elevated Zn concentrations caused alterations in the erythrocyte plasma membrane fluidity, estimated by measuring the fluorescence of 1-[4-trimethylaminophenyl]-6-phenyl-1,3,5-hexatriene and 12-[9-anthroyloxy]stearic acid, located on the surface and in the hydrophobic regions of the lipid bilayer. This study in vitro confirmed that higher concentrations of zinc ions induce marked changes in the composition and structure of membrane lipids in carp erythrocytes.

Each day, cells of the human body are at risk for developing carcinomas influenced by the actions of mutagenic agents. Developed mutations activate a series of repair mechanisms in which a significance role is played by the p53 protein. Stimultaneously, these mutations are the cause of chromosome instability leading to the transformation of cells in the direction of carcinoma. The quality and quantity analysis of 50 squamous cell carcinomas from the larnyx, based on light and electronic microscopic techniques, showed a distinct correlation between the histological type of studied carcinomas and the projection of improper mitosises.

Streszczenie angielskie:
Background: Long-term safety and efficacy of Exelon (rivastigmine) was evaluated in a multi-center open label study of 62 patients with probable mild to moderated Alzheimer's disease living in community setting. Material/Methods: The patients started treatment with 1.5 mg bid (3 mg/day) Exelon and were scheduled to receive doses of 1.5 mg bid Exelon escalating on a biweekly basis. The patients were maintained on the highest tolerated dose within the assigned dose range 1.5 - 60.0 mg bid (3 - 12 mg/day) for the rest of the study. Evaluations were scheduled at biweekly intervals for the first 8 weeks and subsequently at study weeks 12, 18 and 26. Effects of Exelon on cognition were evaluated using the mini-mental state examination (MMSE) and selected items of Alzhemier's disease assessment scale (ADAS-cog) and the staging ot the disease was measured using the global deterioration scale (GDS). Safety was monitored by physical examinations, vital signs, laboratory tests, ECG recording and by the assessment of adverse events. Resutls: 55 patients completed the study (89 p.c.). Patients treated for 26 weeks showed the mean MMSE, ADAS-cog and GDS scores close to baseline values (p = NS) with no improvement and no deterioration. Exelon was generally well tolerated with 11 p.c. of patients withdrawing due to adverse events. The most frequently reported adverse events related to the gastrointestinal tract. Conclusions: In conclusion, the study data indicate that treatment with Exelon is safe, generally well tolerated and inhibits the progression of cognitive decline in patients wtih mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease over 26 weeks of treatment.

Marcinkowskiego w Poznaniu i jej pierwszym kierownikiem, w latach 1956-1965, został Dr P. Gabryel. Następnie Pracownią kierowali Dr E. Simon (1965-1977) i Dr J. Szymaś (1977 i nadal). W latach 1956-2002 wykonano 19000 badań mikroskopowych i 2882 - mózgów (post mortem). Personel Pracowni Patomorfologii Neurochirurgicznej współpracuje z wielom ośrodkami naukowymi w kraju i zagranicą, aktywnie uczestniczy w pracach wielu towarzystw naukowych.

The community survey of the Warsaw district Mokotów estimated the prevalence of dementia in a random, population-based sample, stratified for age and sex. The sample of 1000 elderly (65-84 years) was screened at home with the MMSE test. All elderly under the cut-off 24-25/30 was assigned a diagnosis via the CAMDEX and the DSM-IIIR. The prevalence of dementia was estimated at 5.7 p.c. The following age-specific prevalence of dementia was found in the age groups 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, 80-84: 1.9, 5.8, 8.6 and 16.5 p.c. Rates for VD - 2.7 were higher then those for DAT - 2.3, mixed dementia- 0.5, and secondary dementia - 0.2 p.c. In the younger subgroups (65-74 years) VD was the most frequent and in the older subgroups (75-84 years) the most frequent was DAT. The rates of dementia were quite similar to those found in other European studies.
