Streszczenie angielskie: Acute coronary syndromes (ACS) develop due to rupture of an atherosclerotic plaque with subsequent thrombus formation in the coronary vasculature. High concentrations of serum cholesterol, particularly LDL - cholesterol, are one of the primary risk factors for developing atherosclerosis. LDL - cholesterol directly injures the endothelium and activating components of the inflammaotry process which involves the endothelium, cytokines, smooth muscle cells, lymphocytes, and tissue macrophages. Patients with known coronary artery disease (CAD), particularly ACS, have a more significant relationship between elevated LDL - cholesterol and CAD death than do persons without persisting cardiovascular disease. Multiple randomised, double blind clinical trials have shown that medical treatment with HMG - CoA reductase inhibitors (statins) significantly reduces cardiac mortality and morbidity in patients with known CAD. The beneficial effects of statin therapy may be related to reduction of LDL - cholesterol and pleiotropic mechanisms by which statins may also act.
