Streszczenie angielskie: The viscoelastic model of standing balance extends information provided by traditional amplitude-based measeres, namely, centers of mass (COM) and pressure (COP). Firstly, the purpose of this study was to provide preliminary norms related to the parameters of the viscoelastic model, namely, peak frequency, stiffness, damping, viscosity, and the measures of dispersion of the COP time series, namely, standard deviation and range. Secondly, these measures are discussed in the context of an assessment tool for standing balance in patient populations. The standing balance of healthy adult subjects (n = 59) was assessed on a Kistler force plate. Each subject performed two trials, consisting of the eyes open condition (EO) followed by the eyes closed condition (EC). Norms for younger and older subjects, who adopt distinct strategies for maintaining postural balance, viscous vs. stiffening, were described with the use of descriptive statistics along with the 95 proc. confidence intervals. The rationale and means for maximizing the quality of the measures of standing balance based on the viscoelastic model in the clinical setting are presented.
