    Streszczenie angielskie: Objectives: To compare the frequency of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE) in patients undergoing gynecological operations without low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) prophylaxis and those receiving such prophylaxis. Design: Retrospective, hospital record-based study. Material and methods: About 1785 consecutive patients without LMWH prophylaxis and 1871 ones treated with nadroparin (Fraxiparine) 7500 ICU s.c. 2 h before the operation and repeated daily for 5-7 days or until the patient was fully mobile. DVT was diagnosed on the basis of clinical symptoms and ultrasound examination, and PE clinical symptoms, gasometric data, electrocardiography and chest X-ray. Results: Among the patients without prophylaxis, four cases of PE occurred (0.22 p.c.), two fatal (0.11 p.c.), 13 cases of proximal DVT (0.72 p.c.) and 41 distal DVT complications (2.3 p.c.). In LMWH, group 3 proximal DVT (0.16 p.c.) and 18 distal DVT (0.96 p.c.) developed but there were no clinically expressed pulmonary embolism. According to the Fisher's exact test, the difference between the complications in the analyzed groups is significant P 0.05. Conclusions: The perioperative applying of LMWH to prevent DVT in the patients operated on gynecologically is effective.

    Streszczenie polskie: W pracy omówiono wyniki badań nad stopniem uzależnienia od nikotyny oraz motywacji do zaprzestania palenia wśród pacjentów oddziałów pulmonologicznych. Wykorzystano metodę ankietową, posługując się testem Fagerstroma oraz testem Schneider. Wysoki stopień uzależnienia od nikotyny stwierdzono u 15 proc. badanych, taki sam u mężczyzn jak i u kobiet. 73 proc. badanych wskazywało wysoką motywację do zerwania z nałogiem, uzasadniając to troską o własne zdrowie (87 proc.). Ponad 1/3 badanych nie wie, gdzie szukać pomocy w przypadku wystąpienia problemów związanych z rzucaniem palenia.

    Streszczenie angielskie: The study presents examinations of the level of addiction to nicotine as well as motivation for giving up smoking among the patients of Pulmonological Wards. The questionnaire was used with Fagerstrom and Schneider tests. High level of addiction to nicotine was observed in 15 p.c. patients - both men and women. Among those patients 73 p.c. shows high motivation for giving up smoking. The main reason for that is care about patients' own health (87 p.c.). Over 1/3 of subjects does not know where to seek help in case of problems related to giving up smoking.
