    Streszczenie angielskie: Reactive oxygen species and free radicals are involved in many pathological mechanisms. In physiological conditions does exist balance between generation of free radicals and antioxidant defenses of the human body. Disturbances of prooxidant - antioxidant balance results in oxidative destabilization of cell and tissue components, leading to oxidative stress. Oxidative stress plays a role in the pathology of cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, chronic inflammations, e.g. rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes mellitus, atherosclerosis and heart damage, especially after reperfusion, following revascularisation of infarcted area. The aim of this study was to investigate total antioxidant properties of 17 herbal preparations available at Polish dispensing chemist's. Drugs were produced by local pharmacy companies. Total antioxidant properties of selected drugs were expressed as Ferric Reducing Ability of Plasma (FRAP). Studied drugs spaned from preparations of high antioxidant ability (Succus betulae, Intractum Hyperici, Azulan and Intractum Hippocastani) to those of low antioxidant characteristic (Succus Urticae, Succus Plantaginis). Comparison between Tinctura Hyperici and Intractum Hyperici indicated that Intractum Hyperici, produced by Phytopharm, had higher antioxidant properties than Tinctura Hyperici, made by Herbapol. Available at the Polish pharmaceutical market herbal drugs could be of a value as supplements in therapies, were antioxidant properties of drugs are essential. They could be helpful in the treatment and prevention of wide range of diseases characterized by oxidant / antioxidant imbalance.
