    Streszczenie angielskie: The anticancer drugs are hazardous substances which cause toxic side effects. The Central Laboratory for Processing Antineoplastic Drugs was set for production of cytostatic agents in sterile and safe conditions. Processing of anticancer drugs is done in a fully equipped and cleary marked, separate laboratory. Staff entrusted with manufacturing of cytostatic agents is well trained in handling aseptic production methods of hazardous substances. Personnel is motivated and continously trained. Precautions described above enable to maintain high quality of the product and minimize risk.

    Streszczenie angielskie: The need of developing and implementing protocols and standards of pharmaceutical practice is discussed in this article. The standarization enables better organizationn of the work. It assures high quality of the product. There are three levels of standarization: guidelines (wide range, general), standards (local, more specific) and work protocols (local, the most specific). Emergency protocols are cruical, as they let minimize the health hazard. In the Central Lab for processing antineoplastic drugs at the University Hospital in Cracow (Poland) there were several standards and protocols introduced. After this the organization of work has been improved. The avereness of the personnel has been increased. The product quality raised. In this article several examples of work and emergency protocols are described and discussed.

    Streszczenie angielskie: The first in Poland, Central Lab. for preparing antineoplastic drugs for parenteral use was set up in 1998, at the Pharmacy of University Hospital in Cracow. The pharmacoeconomic justification of centralization of antineoplastic drugs processing was discussed. The savings obtained due to the optimal management of the drug were examined. The cost of drugs used for preparation of four different chemotherapy trials, in the unit and the Central Lab, was calculated and compared. The results suggest that the centralization of antineoplastic drugs processing lets optimize the management of drug. In the Central Lab, unlike in the unit, it is possible to use large packages. Little drug is wasted. The savings in one year perspective reach 94585,90 zł, which is approximately 23000 USD. This amount concerns only four example trials, and doesn't apply remaining aspects like: improvement of the product quality, safety increase, disinfectant savings, etc.
