    Streszczenie angielskie: The objective of this study was to estimate the severity of metabolic disorders at onset in children with IDDM. Biochemical results taken at onset of IDDM were analysed in 151 children on their admission. Metabolic acidosis was found in 38,41 p.c. of those and ketoacidosis was confirmed in 19.21 p.c. children. Mean values of biochemical parameters are similar to those reported in the others European countries. The most severe changes of the acid-base balance parameters were pbserved in youngest children (1-4 y.o.) living in the rural areas (pH 7,22, HCO3-10,2 mmol/l, BE-16,06 mmol/l, p=0,05); this schould suggest that those children schould be watchfully observed and IDDM schould be always considered as a possible cause of any alarming symptoms which occur.

    Streszczenie angielskie: This article presents a case of a seven years-old gril with late diagnosed cystic fibrosis. The child was brought to the hospital because of lumbar pain limiting her body movements. A compression fracture of Th3-L5 vertebrae was diagnosed. After the thorough analysis of the history and the observed respiratory and gastrointestinal symptoms cystic fibrosis was considered as a possible primary cause of the observed disorders; it was later confirmed by sweat test with pilocarpine iontophoresis. Late diagnostic cystic fibrosis accompanied with exocrine pancreatic insufficiency resulted in osteoporosis and subsequently in vertebral fractures.
