    Streszczenie polskie: Selen jest zaliczany do pierwiastków śladowych, niezbędnych w żywym organizmie. Stanowi koenzym enzymu peroksydazy glutationowej (GSH-Px), odgrywa także bardzo ważną rolę w metabolizmie hormonów tarczycy. Selen jest również ważnym elementem obrony antyoksydacyjnej organizmu. Autorzy pracy rozważają biologiczną rolę selenu i jego wpływ na przebieg ciąży prawidłowej i patologicznej.

    Streszczenie angielskie: Selenium is one of the essential microelements in human body. It is a component of the antioxidant enzyme glutathione peroxidase and deiodinases type I, II, III. This trace element plays particular role in preventing organism from the oxygen-induced damage and is also resposible for proper metabolism of thyroidal hormones. Both functions are important for mother and growing fetus during pregnancy. In this paper the authors discussed the biological role of selenium and is importance for pregnant woman and fetus during normal pregnancy and the impact of selenium levels disturbances on main pathology of pregnancy like preterm labour and intrauterine growth restriction. The authors also described the link between selenium concentration and hypothyroidism.
