    Streszczenie angielskie: Bronchial asthma and COPD are two obstructive diseases of the lungs in which a specific inflammatory background plays a critical role. Differential diagnosis between these two diseases is often very difficult and remains problematic even for an experienced lung physician. The authors describe the most important aspects of differentiation including definitions, pathogenesis, clinical signs, laboratory evaluations and some therapeutic aspects as well. All statements were based on currently accepted guidelines.

    Streszczenie polskie: Adstma oskrzelowa oraz przewlekła obturacyjne choroba płuc (POChP) należą do najczęstszych schorzeń układu oddechowego przebiegających z zaburzeniami wentylacji typu obturacyjnego. Odmienna etiologia, patogeneza oraz charakter procesu zapalnego sprawiają, że omawiane jednmostki nozologiczne - mające wiele cech wspólnych - różnią się znacznie przebiegiem klinicznym i sposobem leczenia.

    Streszczenie angielskie: Asthma and COPD are were most frequent pulmonary diseases characterized by airflow limitation. In spite of numerous common signs and symptoms they are quite different regarding clinical prognosis and management. Treatment should be tailored to the patients' needs and involve not only pharmacotherapy, but also education and rehabilitation. The authors describe the role of particular groups of medications including bronchodilators, inhaled and systemic glucocorticosteroids and long term therapy. Special attention has been focused on the updated indications to administer inhaled glucocorticosteroids.
