Streszczenie angielskie: The purpose of our study ias to develop a cost-effective and objective method supporting ophthalmologist diagnosis in mass examinations. Fundus eye images are acquired in routine ophthalmologist diagnosis in mass examinations. Fundus eye images are acquired in routine ophthalmologist diagnosis in mass examinations. Fundus eye images are acquired in routine non-invasive clinical procedures either as directly captured digital images or digitized analogue ones. Important morphological parameters, such as cup to disc surfaces ratios, have been directly measured in the images by the professional image processing software. The values of the fractal dimensions for the image textures have been estimated both in the space and frequency domains. They are treated as additional classifying parameters, describing the complexity of retinal patterns. All the collected data - the fundus images and their characteristics - both for hospital patients and a control group have been described according to the approved medical standards. A proper database management environment, being crucial in performing appropriate comparison, queries and data classification has been set up. Pilot results with preliminary statistical analysis are presented and discussed.
