Streszczenie angielskie: Objectives: (1) to assess the association between Amniotic Fluid Index (AFI) and level of glycemia in pregnant diabetic women: and, (2) to compare the characteristics of AFI in non-diabetic and diabetic pregnancies. Method and materials: 174 diabetic and 447 non-diabetic aubjects participated in the study. Amniotic Fluid Index was measured weekly throughout pregnancy. Blood glucose was monitored utilizing self monitoring blood glucose 7 determinations/daily. Resaults: (1) there was a significant difference between diabetic and non-diabetic individuals (p 0.0001); (2) when glucose was compared in diabetic patients in different gestational categories, no significant difference was found in the level of glycemic control; (3) comparable AFI volumes were found for gestational and pre-existing diabetic women; (4) no association was found among level of glycemia, AFI, fetal size, and polyhydramnios. Conclusion: Achieving the targeted level of glycemia in the pregnant diabetic will minimize the risk for polyhydramnios comparable to that of the general population.
