    Streszczenie angielskie: The aim of the present study was to examine the influence of 3-month administration of the typical neuroleptic haloperidol (1 mg/kg/day) and the atypical one clozapine (30 mg/kg/day) on the expression of the NMDA-R1 mRNA in different brain structures using in situ hybridization in rats. A long-term treatment with haloperidol decreased the NMDA-R1 mRNA level in intermediate and caudal parts of the caudate-putamen and in more caudally localized regions of parietal and frontal cortices, but increased it in the CA1 region of the hippocampus. No significant changes in the nucleus accumbens, insular cortex, CA3 and dentate gyrus of the hippocampus were found after haloperidol administration. Clozapine did not influence the NMDA-R1 mRNA expression in the hippocampus, as well as in the intermediate and caudal regions of the caudate-putamen, but significantly increased it in the rostral region of the latter structure, in the nucleus accumbens and insular cortex. The present study suggests that both these neuroleptics influence the expression of the mRNA of the NMDA-R1 subunit in brain structures which are thought to be important for development of psychotic symptoms.

    Streszczenie polskie: Przyzwojak niechromochłonny (chemodectoma, paraganglioma) jest rzadkim nowotworem głowy i szyi. Najczęstszym jego umiejscowieniem jest ściana tętnicy szyjnej wspólnej. Zezłośliwienie lub przerzuty rozwijają się u 4-9 proc. chorych. W pracy przedstawiono przypadek guza szyi z naciekaniem ściany tętnicy. Guz usunięto w całości oraz wykonano rekonstrukcję naczynia. Leczenie uzupełniono radioterapią.

    Streszczenie angielskie: Though the mechanisms for the vascular actions of vasodilatory beta-blockers are mosty determined, some of their interactions with monoaminergic systems are not elucidated. Because there are evidences supporting a possible involvement of serotonin (5-HT) in the actions of beta-blockers, we studid the effect of propranolol on peripheral serotonergic mechnaisms in normotensive and Goldblatt two-kidney - one clip (2K1C) hypertensive rats. In both groups of animals propranolol decreased systolic blood pressure, significantly increased whole blood serotonin concentration and at the same time it decreased platelet serotonin level. The uptake of the amine by plateles from hypertensive animals was lower than of normotensive animals and it was decreased by propranolol only in the latter. In both groups propranolol inhibited potentiation of ADP - induced platelet aggregation by serotonin. In conclusion, this study provides evidence that propranolol modifies platelet serotonergic mechanisms in normotensive and renal hypertensive rats.

    Streszczenie angielskie: The breathing activity recorder uses three miniature thermistor sensors to detect a flow of air during inspiration and expiration. Changes in sensors, resistance with temperature are converted into voltage and digitized in a 10-bit A/D converter. Detection of the breath is done by microcontroller PIC16F877. Detection algorithm is based on the comparison of the actual signal amplitude with the threshold level. Samples of the signal are transmitted to a host computer via an infrared data link using a IrDA standard. A delicated receiver powered from computer port lines, converts a specific 10-bit data format to two 8-bit words in a RS-232 standard. Data displayed on the screen are stored in a simple database. The algorithm for detection of the breath is similar to that in a microcontroller, however is performed again on line on the raw data. Such a solution allows using much more sophisticated and precise computation than that applied in a simple 8-bit processor unit.

    Streszczenie angielskie: This work presents a simple telemetry system that provides possibility of local heart rate monitoring and transmission of ECG signals to a PC computer via an infrared data link within the distance of few meters. The proposed telemetry system consists of a patient unit (ECG amplifier, A/D converter, infrared transmitter), and a PC unit (infrared receiver, serial RS232 link and software). Amplifield ECG signal is sampled 250 times per second, and a 10-bit A/D conversion is performed by a microcontroller PIC16F877, the main part of the microcontroller program is connected to a QRS detector. Digital filters are matched to an average QRS during sinus rhythm from a well known pass-band filter with a center frequency of 16.7 Hz and Q factor of 4.7. The heart rate (HR) is computed as an average of 4 from 7 last detected R-R intervals, where two shortest and one longest interval are rejected. The above alghoritms provide high quality recording of ECG signal during rest and exercise.

    Streszczenie angielskie: The quality of recorded Brain Stem Auditory Evoked Responses (BAERS) greatly depends on many factors such as potential characteristic, skin preparation, and level of background noise. That is why three is a need of a stable source of a BAERS signal with a priori known signal to noise ratio (SNR). The paper describes an acoustical triggered signal source of Brain Stem Auditory Evoked Potentials, called an EP generator that imitates the real investigation with the patient. The main concept to similar to the arbitrary waveform generator where signal is playedback from memory. The heart of the EP generator is trigerred D/A converter that after click produces, one of ten patterns stored in the data memory. Noise may be added to pattern signal with a defined SNR in the range of 8 to 60 dB. Application of the proposed EP generator is similar to the examination of the patient and can significantly improve testing the quality of BAERS data recording systems.

    Streszczenie angielskie: This paper describes the project in which visually impaired diabetics can operate a blood glucose monitor. This can be done with the help of a device reading aloud all messages (including glucose levels), displayed on a LCD screen. The reader contains a microprocessor, a EPROM memory, a D/A converter and a loudspeaker with an amplifier. Most of the messages are recorded as a whole, and is played directly from the memory, while the rest are synthesised - spelled letter by letter. All the numeric values are red correctly up to 999. At present the device connects to OneTuch and reads Polish messages. Thanks to the software, the process of creating/updating a memory image is quick and easy. Very little work is required to change it to other languages. The product is adapted to OneTouh glucose monitor, which was chosen as the best device for this purpose. In the future, by co-operting with manufacturers, other reader interfaces can be developed.
