Streszczenie angielskie: The aim of the study was to investigate the influence of Uncaria tomentosa (Vilcacora) on the course of an experimentally induced local pneumonia in calves. The study was performed on 20 calves suffering from an induced lung inflammation. The animals were divided into two equal groups. The calves from group I were treated orally with 3600 mg/calf/day of Uncaria tomentosa for 17 consecutive days. The calves of group II served as controls and received placebo. A series of routine haematological parameters, inflammatory markers (serum and bronchoalveolar eicosanoids such as LTB4, TXB4, PGE2, PGF2ŕ and also Fe, Zn, Cu) and immunophenotype of peripheral blood lymphocyte subsets (T, Th, Ts/Tc, B) were assayed in the calves. Additionally, the body temperature was examined every day during the experiment. Significant changes caused by the development of lung inflammatory process and the regulating influence of Uncaria tomentosa were found in calves with regard to their clinical status and laboratory-tested parameters. The rectal temperature significantly increased in the untreated animals and it remained on the higher level until the tenth day of the obsevation. The examination of the peripheral lymphocyte subsets in the calves from group I revealed a significant increase in the total number and percentage of CD2 + and CD4+ cells. On the other hand, the systematic decrease in the peripheral blood neutrophil and MID-cell number was observed. Finally, on the last day of the experiment, the values were significantly lower, compared with their initial values...
