Streszczenie angielskie: The aim of this study was to assess the ability to predict bening adnexal masses in postmenopausal women by vaginal ultrasound and to evaluate the effectiveness of laparoscopic management in selected patients. Using the sonomorfologic score for tumor differentation was analysed prospectively in group of the postmenopausal women which were admitted consecutively to our department for surgical exploration of an adnexal mass. Fourty five patients with unilateral benign ovarian cysts were selected for laparoscopic approach. Unilateral salpingo-oophoreclomy was performed in fourty four patients and bilateral adenoxectomy was necessary in one case. All the masses, except two cases were benign ones. The ultrasound scoring system allowed us for correct characterization as a benign versus the malignant ovarian tumors. As well as the clinical examination, the ultrasound appearance are real in correct prediction of benign ovarian masses in postmenopausal women. Operative laparoscopy is acceptable for these patients and provides for a short period of hospitalization and a rapid recovery.

Streszczenie polskie: Celem pracy była ocena przydatności miejscowego kleju do skóry - Dermabond w zaopatrywaniu ran po zabiegach laparoskopowych. Oceniano miejscowe reakcje tkankowe, sposób gojenia, efekt kosmetyczny. Autorzy sugerują wysoką przydatność preparatu Dermabond w przytrzymywaniu zbliżonych brzegów ran oraz prawidłowym gojeniu.

Streszczenie angielskie: The aim of the study was to evaluate the usefulenss of skin glue - Dermabond in wound repair after laparoscopy intervention. It is a new adhesive with the physical properties that differ from other cyanoacrylate adhesives and give a significantly greater tensile strength. It was proved to have similar cosmetic results in the repair of lacerations and incisions when compared with those closed with monofilament sutures. Octylcyanoacrylate tissue adhesive has been approved for clinical use by the Health Protection Branch of Health Canada and has been approved for clincial trials by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The study was conducted on thirty women with use of skin glue in wound closure after laparoscopy. Thirty-five patietns served as controls whose skin was closed with a monofilament suture by standard sterile techniques. We estimated local tissue reaction, way of lealing and cosmetic results. There was no difference in healing found in this study between the two examined groups. The only significant correlation outcome measures was in a very good cosmetic effect in the group where skin glue (p = 0.0231) was applied. The authors suggesthigh usefulness of Dermabond glue in good wound closure and correct healing.

Poznanie czynników proangiogennych i antyangiogennych pozwoli prawdopodobnie ingerować w proces angiogenezy w celu jej zahamowania (w nowotworach) albo pobudzenia w leczeniu np. choroby niedokrwiennej serca. W artykule przedstwaiono niektóre aspekty aktualnej wiedzy na temat angiogenezy i jej regulacji.

Streszczenie angielskie: The pathogenesis of thyroid cancer is complex. Iodium deficiency, genetic factors, sex, older age, irradiation in childhood, thyroid growth stimulating antibodies and epithelial growth factor possibly affect its development. Recent reports, also epidemiological, have shown that differentiated thyroid cancer (papillary, follicular, oxyphillic) is dependent on sex hormones, especially estrogens. This has prompted research into the presence of estrogens and progesterone, as well as androgen receptors (ER, PR and AR) in normal and neoplastic thyreocytes and estradiol content in thyroid tissue. The results of these investigations imply that thyroid cancer are estrogen-dependent. There is, however, no agreement in reports about correlation between tumor malignancy and ER, PR and AR expression. In this study 72 thyroid glands have been examined using immunohistochemical assays with ERs and PRs antibodies. Positive staining was demonstrated mainly in differentiated thyroid cancer nuclei (17 ERs positive and 2 PRs positive). There was no expression of antibodies in non-neoplastic cells or in adjacent tissues. The nuclei of 3 oxyphillic and 4 follicular adenomas were also ERs positive. On the other hand nuclei of 5 fokkicular adenomas were PRs positive. These results are in agreement with most available data. It seems, however, that the material so far examined by the investigators is too small. Furthermore, because of using various methods the results cannot be compared. Further studies are necessary to reveal if there is any true influence of sex hormones on the development of thyroid lesions and if the detection of sex hormone receptors may help in choosing adequate therapy.

Streszczenie angielskie: Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is one of the factors related to angiogenesis of tumors and physiological and pathological proliferative processes. Location of VEGF in human thyroid tissue with various thyroid disorders was studied in order to explore its possible involvement in proliferative processes. Immunohistochemical examination was performed on 69 formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded thyroid tissue specimens using the labelled streptoavidin biotin peroxidase complex detection system. VEGF was not identified in normal thyroid follicular cells. Some but not all tumor thyreocytes expressed VEGF in cytoplasm. VEGF positive expression was found in 6/15 patients with papillary carcinoma, 4/9 with follicular carcinoma, 14/28 with follicular adenoma and 2/17 with adenomatous goiter. In benign follicular adenoma and adenomatous goiter the weak expression of VEGF was found in small areas of the tumor tissues, whereas in malignant tumors it was found strongly in many cells. VEGF probably functions as a hypoxia-inducible angiogenic factor, and the expression of VEGF is stronger in malignant tumors, which need more oxygen supply to proliferate. An intensive VEGF production by differentiated thyroid carcinomas could be a promising marker of tumor aggressiveness and may also be useful as a predictor of metastatic potential and extension of tumor mass.
