Streszczenie angielskie: Background: The purpose of our study was to investigate the influence of low-dose heparin on peroxide levels and the antioxidant activity of superoxide dysmutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase in the red blood cells of patients undergoing minor abdominal surgery. Material/Methods: 49 patients scheduled for open cholecystectomy, with a median age of 43, were randomly assigned to either the heparin group (HG) or the placebo group (PG). HG patients received a subcutaneous dose of 100 IU/kg body weight of standard heparin for 6 days, beginning the first day after surgery. On the day prior to surgery and on the 1st, 2nd and 6th postoperative days, blood samples from peripheral veins were collected, and the levels of peroxides, superoxide dysmutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase activity in the hemolysate of red blood cells were determined. The level of malondialdehyde was also measured. Results: Signifciantly lower levels of peroxides, as well as higher antioxidant activity of SOD and CAT, was found in the erythrocytes of HG patients. Heparin adminisitration did not significantly influence the activity of glutathione peroxidase. There were also no differences in the levels of malondialdehyde between HG and PG patients. Conclusions: Low-dose standard heparin administered subcutaneously in patients undergoing minor abdominal surgery shows an antioxidant effect. Furhter studies are required to clarify the mechanism of increased SOD and CAT activity in red blood cells induced by heparin.

Streszczenie polskie: Celem pracy była ocena wybranych elementów jakości życia u chorych z powodu stopy cukrzycowej (s.c.) w zależności od ostatecznego wyniku leczenia. Materiał i metodyka. Badaną grupę stanowiło 32 chorych. Wyróżniono 4 grupy chorych. Grupę 1 stanowili chorzy z neuropatyczną s.c., u których uratowano funkcjonalną kończynę dolną. Pozostałe grupy obejmowały chorych ze s.c. i niedrożnością tętnic kończyn, u których uratowano funkcjonalną kończynę dolną (grupa 2), u których amputowano kończynę dolną poniżej stawu kolanowego (grupa 3) oraz u których amputowano kończynę dolną powyżej stawu kolanowego (grupa 4). Zastosowano metodę ankiety rozsyłanej standaryzowanej, składającej się z ośmiu pytań dotyczących wybranych elementów jakości życia (subiektywna ocena stanu zdrowia, porównanie swojego stanu zdrowia z innymi osobami w podobnej grupie wiekowej, wpływ zdrowia na pracę zawodową i kontakty społeczne oraz wykonywanie codziennych czynności, obawa przed pogorszeniem stanu zdrowia). Uzyskane wyniki porównano posługując się testem ANOVA. Wyniki.

Streszczenie angielskie: Aim of the study was to evaluate chosen components of quality of life (QoL) in relation to final outcome in patients operated on because of diabetic foot (DF). Material and methods. Four groups of patients were analysed. Group 1 consisted of patients with neuropathic DF in whom functional limb salvage was achieved. Further groups consisted of patients with DF and peripheral arterial occlusive disease in whom limb salvag was achieved (Group 2), those for whom below knee amputation was performed (Group 3) and those in whom above knee amputation was performed (Group 4). Each patient was sent a questionnaire casting of 8 questions relating to selected components of QoL (a subjective assessment of health and its impact on the patients' professional and social contacts as well as the performance of everyday routines, comparison of their state of health with the health of other patients of the same age, and fear of their condition getting worse). The results obtained were compared with ANOVA test. Results. We found that the postoperative status of the limb influenced the QoL of patients treated because of DF. The higher the level of amputation the poorer the QoL, mainly because of limitation of both everyday and of social activities. Conclusions. We concluded that a therapeutic approach aimed at foot- or knee savage may improve QoL in patients treated because of DF.
