Streszczenie angielskie: Microflora colonizing the newborn gut after the birth significantly affects the development of lymphoid tissue associated with mucosal surfaces as well as the systemic immune reactions inducing the balanced immunological responses against pathogens and food antigens. Recently, the sharp increase in the occurrence of allergic diseases has been observed in economically developed Western countries. Tis phenomena according to so called "hygienic hypothesis" could be connected with the hygienic lifestyle during newborn and neonatal period influencing the composition of gut microflora. The disturbances in the intestinal ecosystem may result in imbalance in the development of T-helper response and in a dominance of Th2 activity. Thus, the groving attention of the role of gut microflora in the pathogenesis of allergy has brought efforts to optimize its composition by probiotics, i.e. nonpathogenic intestinal bacteria of human origin beneficial to health. This review focuses on the role of the gut microflora in the development of the immune system in early postnatal period. The results of the influence of the intentional colonization of newborns with probiotics on the prevention of the development of allergy are presented.

Streszczenie angielskie: Calreticulin (CRT) has been identified as one of the autoantigens of anti-gliadin antibodies found in celiac disease. In this study we have examined the validity of serum anti-CRT antibody levels in patients with celiac disease and in control group and assessed their sensitivity and specificity against standard serological tests. Serum IgA anti-CRT antibody levels measured by ELISA and IgA anti-endomysial antibodies (EmA) and IgA anti-reticulin antibodies (ARA) by indirect immunofluorescence were determined in 35 untreated celiac disease and in 24 non-celiac controls. IgA EmA and IgA ARA antibodies were positive in 32 and 34 patients (sensitivity 91,4 and 97,1 p.c.). IgA anti-CRT antibodies were positive in 15 celiac patients out of 33 examined (sensitivity 45,5 p.c.). No controls were ARA, EmA and anti-CRT positive. Our results revealed that anti-CRT antibodies despite their high specificity in IgA (100 p.c.) have limited value in screening programs for celiac disease.
